These articles discuss how The Perrin Technique®️ may help support the management of symptoms commonly experienced in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS/ME), Fibromyalgia, and Long Covid—particularly fatigue and autonomic dysfunction. The Perrin Technique®️ is a specialised osteopathic approach aimed at improving neuro-lymphatic drainage and easing associated symptoms. Individual experiences may vary.

Understanding Long Covid Through an Osteopathic Lens

For patients continuing to experience the effects of post-viral illness, understanding the multi-system nature of Long Covid symptoms is essential to finding the right specialist support. Rakhee Osteopathy takes a whole-body approach to Long Covid care, centred on The Perrin Technique — a specialist osteopathic protocol developed by Dr Raymond Perrin that directly addresses the physiological mechanisms thought to underlie persistent post-viral fatigue and neurological dysfunction. Individual responses to treatment will vary, and all care is tailored to each patient's specific presentation.

The Multi-System Nature of Long Covid

Long Covid manifests differently in each patient, but commonly reported symptoms include persistent fatigue, breathlessness, joint and muscle pain, headaches, nerve pain, chest tightness, dizziness, and cognitive difficulties often referred to as brain fog. What makes the condition particularly challenging is its multi-system character — affecting not only the respiratory system but also the musculoskeletal, nervous, and cardiovascular systems simultaneously.

This complexity is precisely why The Perrin Technique is well suited to Long Covid. Rather than addressing individual symptoms in isolation, it targets the underlying physiological dysfunction — particularly autonomic nervous system dysregulation and impaired lymphatic drainage of the central nervous system — that is thought to drive the condition's wide-ranging effects.

The Perrin Technique: Addressing Root Mechanisms

The Perrin Technique was developed by Dr Raymond Perrin on the basis that conditions such as Long Covid and CFS/ME involve a build-up of toxins in the brain and spinal cord, resulting from dysfunction in the central nervous system's lymphatic drainage. Treatment works by restoring this drainage and supporting nervous system regulation through a combination of targeted manual therapies:

  • Lymphatic drainage: Gentle manual work along the lymphatic pathways encourages the clearance of accumulated toxins and metabolic waste from the central nervous system. This congestion is thought to contribute significantly to the neurological symptoms and profound fatigue characteristic of Long Covid.

  • Soft tissue work along the spine and chest: Careful manipulation of the thoracic spine and rib cage addresses structural tension in the respiratory muscles, intercostal muscles, and fascial structures — areas where Long Covid patients often present with significant restriction. Restoring normal movement and function to these structures may support improved respiratory mechanics and reduced breathlessness during daily activity.

  • Cranial osteopathic techniques: Subtle work at the cranium and upper cervical region supports regulation of the central nervous system and may help to ease brain fog, headaches, sleep disturbance, and heightened sensitivity — symptoms closely associated with autonomic dysfunction in Long Covid.

  • Autonomic nervous system regulation: Long Covid frequently involves dysregulation of the autonomic nervous system, producing symptoms such as fatigue, heart palpitations, temperature dysregulation, and disrupted sleep. By working along the spine and associated structures, The Perrin Technique aims to reduce sympathetic overactivity and restore greater autonomic balance, with potential positive effects across multiple symptom areas.

Weekly sessions are recommended in the initial phase of treatment to allow the therapeutic process to develop progressively. Patients should be aware that a temporary increase in symptoms may occur before improvement is noticed. This is a normal and expected part of the protocol and is discussed openly with patients from the outset.

Fatigue, Energy, and Why Exercise Is Not Part of the Protocol

The overwhelming fatigue experienced by many Long Covid patients often stems from multiple interacting factors, including poor sleep quality, autonomic dysfunction, and the physical tension patterns that accumulate when the body is under sustained physiological stress. Improving spinal mobility, reducing muscular tension, and supporting nervous system regulation through The Perrin Technique may help reduce the energy expenditure these patterns create — supporting the body's capacity for recovery over time.

Crucially, The Perrin Technique does not involve graded exercise therapy or progressive activity programmes. For Long Covid patients experiencing post-exertional malaise — a worsening of symptoms following physical or cognitive exertion — activity-based approaches can be counterproductive and may set recovery back. The Perrin Technique prioritises gentle manual therapy, nervous system support, and pacing. Where activity and daily functioning are discussed as part of a patient's care, guidance is always patient-specific, practitioner-led, and based on individual capacity.

Specialist Care at Rakhee Osteopathy

Rakhee Osteopathy has been awarded twice by Dr Raymond Perrin himself for excellence in practising The Perrin Technique, and patients highly recommend the approach in the management of Long Covid and CFS/ME. Rakhee Mediratta trained directly with Dr Perrin and continues to work alongside him, ensuring that treatment at the clinic accurately reflects his protocol in both method and clinical application.

Each patient undergoes a thorough individual assessment, and treatment plans are shaped by their specific symptom profile, history, and current functional capacity. Recovery from Long Covid can be a gradual process, and realistic expectations are discussed openly from the first appointment. With appropriate specialist support, meaningful progress may be achievable — though the pace and extent of improvement will differ between individuals.
