Dr Perrin’s research in CFS/ME

Updated: Oct 21, 2022

The Perrin Technique

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Myalgic Encephalitis also known more commonly as CFS/ME is a complicated disorder which despite advances in medical technology still remains a black hole of medicine. There is no agreed diagnosis or treatment yet there are thousands of patients suffering this disease and many patients who are suffering in silence without a positive diagnosis. If you have been diagnosed with CFS/ME or you are experiencing symptoms of Chronic Fatigue then you need to speak to us at Rakhee Osteopathy to find out about The Perrin Technique.

The Perrin Technique was established by Dr Raymond Perrin. Dr Perrin first became involved with CFS/ME in 1989 as an osteopath specialising in the management of sports injuries. He came across a patient who was suffering from back pain with postural issues and was also experiencing symptoms of Chronic Fatigue. At the time CFS/ME was almost unheard of, so Dr Perrin focused on helping the patient manage his back pain by helping to correct his postural problems. After a few months of osteopathic therapy the patient found that his back pain was significantly improving, and during this time the patient noted that his symptoms of Chronic Fatigue were also disappearing. This encouraged Dr Perrin to research CFS/ME and evaluate the relationship between osteopathic massage and treating CFS/ME.

Diagnosis and management of CFS/ME with The Perrin Technique in London

The original patient had been suffering from thoracic spinal problems so Dr Perrin began his research by focusing on the thoracic spine. This is the upper and middle part of the back. It was later found that the majority of CFS/ME patients suffer from similar problems of the thoracic spine and this is now used as one of the key diagnostic factors when providing patients with a positive diagnosis for the disease. Dr Perrin’s research also shows that the nerves of the sympathetic nervous system go through the thoracic spine and spread out throughout the body. He realised that the symptoms of CFS/ME were being caused as a result of strain on the sympathetic nervous system which is involved in maintaining the homeostasis of the body. Toxins were building up in the sympathetic nervous system with a devastating impact on the overall health and function of the body. Research shows that osteopathic massage helps remove toxins from the body more efficiently, thereby reducing the stress on the sympathetic nervous system and allowing the body to maintain its homeostasis for improved health and wellbeing. When all the research was put together Dr Perrin came up with The Perrin Technique.
