Diagnosing CFS/ME with The Perrin Technique

The Perrin Technique

The Perrin Technique is an osteopathic technique which is designed to help in the diagnosis and management of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or CFS/ME. A complex, multi system disorder, even in this modern era CFS/ME still remains a black hole of medicine. It has a devastating impact on the patient and everyone around them and it can bring the patient’s life to a standstill preventing them from carrying out their daily activities or even looking after themselves for a long period of time. It is characterised by severe tiredness and weakness and many patients find themselves in a wheelchair or even bedbound.

Alongside many other factors, research suggests that viral infections can alter the immune response, which in turn can chronically activate the immune system and lead to many of the symptoms associated with CFS/ME. This has been found in patients who have suffered from COVID-19 during the pandemic. Many patients found that despite being free of infection for several months, some of the symptoms remained, affecting their health and wellbeing and this has been termed as Long Covid. Whether you are suffering from Long Covid or you may be affected by CFS/ME, you need to speak to us at Rakhee osteopathy and let us help you diagnose and manage your symptoms more effectively in the aim to improve the quality of life, your health and your wellbeing. Identifying signs with The Perrin technique

Currently the standard diagnostic protocol of CFS/ME is by exclusion. This means that a patient will only be diagnosed as suffering from CFS/ME when all other possible diagnostic tests have proved negative. This is a lengthy process and requires the patient to undergo numerous unnecessary pathological testing which could be avoided.

Here at Rakhee Osteopathy our trained practitioners of The Perrin technique will provide you with a positive diagnosis of the disease which will help you understand your illness better and enable us to put together an individually tailored treatment plan for you.

We look for visual signs and characteristics which have been commonly found in patients suffering from CFS/ME. Firstly CFS/ME is characterised by persistent or recurrent fatigue for at least the past 6 months. Then a physical assessment is carried out in order to identify postural or mechanical disturbances of the thoracic spine. We will look for breast varicosities and tenderness in the Perrin’s point, an area approximately 2-3cm around the left nipple. Other signs include a tender coeliac plexus, an area found in the abdomen, and finally we will examine the quality of the cranial rhythmic impulse and look for reduced cranial flow. If these symptoms are identified, then the patient is classified as having CFS/ME. Although this may sound like a lot, in practice searching for physical signs using The Perrin Technique is both quick and simple, making it an efficient screening tool for CFS/ME. If you were infected by COVID-19 or you have suffered from a similar viral infection then we will put together a treatment plan tailored for your needs. With a confirmed diagnosis we will be able to help you manage your symptoms more effectively and begin your road to recovery. Speak to us at Rakhee Osteopathy today and find out more.
